First was introduced by Zig around 2021. I’ve also strangely found utility in Zig by using it as a hardware logic verification tool. When I was designing a logically complex mixed percision hardware multiply and accumulate unit (it was logically complex as signed numbers were being “converted” into unsigned, and back to signed via a constant addition, to remove sign padding so to feed into dadda reduction trees, as well as lots of bit manipulation and up to 5-20 multiplications at once), Zig’s variable bit length data types were handy to model the hardware and Zig’s built in unit testing was convenient.
